The value-brand compatibility gap

Office Depot, Staples, Amazon Basics, Uline and SheetLabels all claim Avery compatibility. Most sit in their own Layout Family with a margin drift of roughly 0.06", enough to push text off the edge. Green prints clean on the Avery template, amber drifts within tolerance, red needs its own template.

Why the drift exists

  • Avery 5160Left/right margin drift: Avery 0.21975in vs value-brand cluster 0.1875in (~0.032in / half a millimeter). Print will offset horizontally by ~0.03in. OL875 has same margins as Avery but round-corner die-cut. Uline S-15184 has 0.0500in corner radius.
  • Avery 5163Value-brand 10-up cluster all in LF-0028 with margins 0.1563in vs Avery 0.18in (~0.024in drift). OL125 and WL-OL125 share Avery-like margins but different corner radius.
  • Avery 5164Value-brand 6-up cluster in LF-0030 has label height 3.3333in vs Avery 3.344in, near-identical label but distinct margin scheme (0.1560in vs 0.14815in) explains why value-brand template won't print cleanly on Avery template.
  • Avery 5167LARGEST DRIFT in the corpus. Value-brand 80-up (0.1563in left margin) vs Avery (0.32812in left margin) = 0.172in drift, over 4mm horizontal offset. This is the strongest 'why your Staples labels won't print' case study.
  • Avery 8165Full-sheet 1-up geometry is universally compatible, no margins to drift. Nine products all sit in LF-0007. Only WL-OL175 has corner-radius NR keeping it in a separate LF.
  • Avery 5066CRITICAL DIVERGENCE: OD/Staples/AmazonBasics use a 3x7 21-up grid (LF-0046), a completely different layout from Avery's canonical 2x15 30-up (LF-0013). Not a margin drift, a different grid. Template SWAP required, not a drift correction.
  • Avery 5395Name-badge fragmentation: every brand publishes a slightly different geometry, SL574 is 3.375x2.33 with different margins; OL5026 is 3.5x2.25 (different label dims); WL-5030 is 3.375x2.3125. No single template covers all. 100% fragmentation across 7 SKUs and 7 LFs.
  • Avery 22807Round labels with 20-up 2in geometry mostly co-map to LF-0006 (Avery + OL + SL all agree). WL-OL5375 is separated only because it publishes corner_radius=1in (label radius) vs the others' NR, a schema convention difference, not a real print difference.
  • Avery 5202SheetLabels SL531 is 8x1.5 (1x6 grid), narrower AND wider than Avery 5202 8x1 (1x8 grid). Not template-swappable. Different physical label.
  • Avery 5168All four brands publish identical 3.5x5 4-up geometry, separated into LF-0126/0127/0128/0103 by corner-radius tolerance only (0.0 vs 0.125). Templates are effectively interchangeable in practice. GREEN candidate after print validation.
